Pompoko – Brighton

Hey champs, it’s Aaron, and today we’re talking about my absolute favourite spot in Brighton — Pompoko. If you’re ever in town, this little Japanese gem is where you need to be. Now, I’ll be upfront: I’m a creature of habit, so I’ve only ever ordered their Chicken Nanban Don or Prawn Nanban Don, but honestly, those two dishes alone are enough to keep me coming back.

Let’s talk about the Nanban Don for a second. The chicken is crispy perfection — fried just right with a juicy inside, while the prawns are plump and fresh. But the magic? It’s all in that sweet and tangy sauce they drizzle on top. It’s got this perfect balance of flavors, mixing that sharp, almost pickled tang with a sweetness that just ties the whole dish together. Paired with a bed of steaming rice, it’s pure comfort in a bowl. Every bite makes you feel like you’ve discovered Brighton’s best-kept secret.

The place itself? Super chill, and the prices are ridiculously reasonable, which is why it’s always packed. Fair warning though: it’s cash only, so don’t rock up with just your card unless you want to cry into an empty wallet. Grab some cash and head in early to snag a seat because this spot fills up fast.

Now, I can’t vouch for the rest of the menu since I’m all about that Nanban life, but if everything else is as good as my go-to dishes, you’re in for a treat. Pompoko’s got that no-fuss vibe, perfect for a casual, delicious meal that won’t break the bank. So, if you’re in Brighton, make this your first stop — you won’t regret it.
